Making Hair Colour Last

• Wash less often. Every wash takes some colour with it, and that is true of every shampoo ever made.
• Use cool water. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets dye escape — this is the single biggest avoidable cause of fading.
• Wait 48 hours after colouring before the first wash.
• Keep hair out of strong sun where you can. UV fades hair dye much as it fades fabric.
• Chlorine and salt water both strip colour fast. Wet the hair with clean water and add conditioner before swimming.

How to Use a Hair Mask

1. Shampoo first and squeeze the hair out. A mask cannot get into hair that is already full of water.
2. Work it through the mid-lengths and ends. Keep it off the scalp — this is for the hair, and roots do not need it.
3. Leave it the time the pack says, usually 3 to 10 minutes. Longer does not do more; hair takes up what it can and the rest rinses away.
4. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Anything left behind weighs hair down and makes it look greasy by the next day.
5. Use it once or twice a week, in place of your conditioner rather than as well as it.

Patch Test Before the First Use

Do this once, before the first full application, and it takes two minutes. Put a small amount behind the ear or on the inner elbow, leave it for 24 hours, and do not use the product if the skin reddens, itches or stings. A reaction on a coin-sized patch is a nuisance; the same reaction across a whole scalp is not.
