Measuring Properly

A home device is only as good as the technique, and most home readings are taken wrong.

• Blood pressure: sit quietly for five minutes first, back supported, feet flat, arm at heart level, cuff on bare skin, correct cuff size. No caffeine, food or exercise for thirty minutes before. Take two or three readings a minute apart and record them all — a single high reading means very little.

• Temperature: use the same method each time and know that methods differ. 38°C or above is a fever. In a baby under three months, any fever needs a doctor the same day.

• Blood glucose: wash and dry hands — food residue on a finger gives a falsely high reading. Use the side of the fingertip, which hurts less, and rotate fingers.

Looking After Devices

• Store cool and dry. Humidity here degrades glucose test strips quickly — keep the vial tightly closed and never use strips past their date or from an open vial past its stated period.

• Clean a nebuliser after every use and dry it completely. A damp nebuliser breathes bacteria straight into the lungs.

• Replace blood pressure cuffs when the material stiffens or the seal leaks.

• Take a home device to your next appointment and check it against the clinic’s once a year.

• Remove batteries from anything being stored for months.

What a Device Cannot Do

A reading is information, not a diagnosis. Keep a written record and take it to your doctor rather than adjusting your own medication on the strength of it. And do not let a normal reading reassure you out of getting symptoms checked — chest pain, sudden breathlessness, weakness on one side or slurred speech are emergencies regardless of what any device says.

Storing It Properly

Bangladesh’s heat and humidity are harder on most products than anything else they will meet.

• Cool, dry and out of direct sunlight — not a sunny windowsill, and not the hottest corner of the bathroom.

• Keep the cap closed properly. Air and moisture do more damage over months than anything else.

• Do not decant into an unmarked container. Once the pack is gone, so are the batch number, the expiry date and the instructions.

• Keep it out of reach of children.

Are home blood pressure monitors accurate?

Validated upper-arm monitors generally are, used correctly. Wrist monitors are more sensitive to position. Check yours against a clinic reading once a year.

Why do my readings vary so much?

Blood pressure varies naturally through the day, and technique changes it substantially. Rest first, arm at heart level, and judge by a pattern over days rather than one reading.

How should I store test strips?

In their original vial, tightly closed, cool and dry, and used within the period stated after opening. Humidity ruins them and produces false readings.
