Moisture or Protein — Which Does Your Hair Want?

A quick test that saves a lot of guessing. Take a shed strand and stretch it gently when wet. If it stretches a long way and stays stretched or snaps limply, it needs protein. If it barely stretches at all and snaps immediately, it needs moisture — and this is a moisture mask. Hair that has been bleached or heat-styled hard often needs both, alternated week by week.

How to Use a Hair Mask

1. Shampoo first and squeeze the hair out. A mask cannot get into hair that is already full of water.
2. Work it through the mid-lengths and ends. Keep it off the scalp — this is for the hair, and roots do not need it.
3. Leave it the time the pack says, usually 3 to 10 minutes. Longer does not do more; hair takes up what it can and the rest rinses away.
4. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Anything left behind weighs hair down and makes it look greasy by the next day.
5. Use it once or twice a week, in place of your conditioner rather than as well as it.

Patch Test Before the First Use

Do this once, before the first full application, and it takes two minutes. Put a small amount behind the ear or on the inner elbow, leave it for 24 hours, and do not use the product if the skin reddens, itches or stings. A reaction on a coin-sized patch is a nuisance; the same reaction across a whole scalp is not.
