Starting With Cereal
Cereal is usually a baby’s first solid food, and the way it is introduced matters more than which brand you choose.
Start with a single grain — plain rice or oat — rather than a mixed or fruit variety. If there is a reaction, you know what caused it.
Start thin. Mix it runny at first and thicken it over the following weeks as your baby learns to manage it.
One new food at a time, three to five days apart. This is how allergies are spotted.
Once a day to begin with, at a time when your baby is alert and not ravenous.
Iron-fortified cereal is genuinely useful. A baby’s iron stores from birth start running down at around six months, and iron deficiency is common in Bangladesh.
No added salt or sugar before one year, and no honey before twelve months.
Preparing and Storing It Safely
Wash your hands; sterilise the bowl and spoon for younger babies.
Mix with water, breast milk or formula at the temperature the pack states.
Test on the inside of your wrist before every feed.
Never feed from a bowl you intend to store. Saliva on the spoon contaminates the whole portion — take out what you need.
Throw away leftovers from a feed rather than reheating them.
Note the “use within” period after opening — usually three to four weeks. Write the opening date on the tin.
Keep it airtight. Humidity here turns cereal powder solid, and a lumpy tin has taken on moisture.
Frequently Asked Questions
When can my baby start cereal?
Around six months is the general guidance, alongside continued breastfeeding or formula. Your paediatrician is the right person to confirm it for your baby — the label age is a floor, not a target.
Can I put cereal in a bottle?
No. Cereal in a bottle is a choking risk, it overfeeds, and it skips the point of solids, which is learning to eat from a spoon. Feed it from a spoon, with the baby sitting up.
My baby refuses it. What should I do?
Offer it again another day without pressure. A baby may need eight or ten calm exposures before accepting a new food. If your baby refuses all food, is losing weight or seems unwell, see a doctor.
How much shelf life will it have?
We stock to arrive well within date and do not knowingly ship anything close to expiry. If you need a specific minimum for a particular order, ask before placing it and we will check the batch.
How do I know the product is genuine?
Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.
