Scalp Care is where most hair problems are actually solved — anti-dandruff shampoos, scalp serums and tonics, exfoliating scrubs, soothing oils and treatments for itching, flaking and irritation.

Why the Scalp and Not the Hair
Hair above the skin is dead protein. Nothing you put on it makes it grow, and nothing repairs it. The living part of hair is the follicle, under the skin — which means the scalp is the only place a product can influence growth, shedding or thickness. That is why a serum goes on the scalp and not on the ends, and why a scalp problem left untreated shows up in the hair months later.

Dandruff Is Not Dryness
This is the single most useful correction in the whole category. Dandruff is usually a reaction to Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone’s scalp and feeds on its natural oils. The flaking is inflammation, not dehydration.

More oil often makes it worse, because oil is what the yeast feeds on. Heavy oiling for days at a time in this climate is a common cause of a flare rather than a cure.
An anti-dandruff shampoo has to stay on the scalp for three to five minutes to work. Applied and rinsed straight off, it does almost nothing — which is why so many people conclude it “did not work”.
Alternate two active ingredients — for example zinc pyrithione and ketoconazole — rather than using one indefinitely.
Flaking with redness, greasy yellow scale or a sore scalp is seborrhoeic dermatitis and worth seeing a doctor about. Silvery, thick, well-defined plaques may be psoriasis, which is treated differently.

Everyday Scalp Habits

Massage with fingertips, never nails. Scratching a scalp breaks the skin and is how a mild itch becomes an infection.
Lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water dries the scalp and increases oil production in response.
Rinse until the water runs clear. Product residue is a common and completely avoidable cause of itching.
Do not sleep with a heavy oil in more than occasionally.

How often should I use an anti-dandruff shampoo?
Two or three times a week while the flaking is active, leaving it on the scalp for three to five minutes each time, then once a week to keep it away. Use a normal shampoo in between.
Is oiling good or bad for the scalp?
It depends on your scalp. A light oil massaged in for an hour before washing helps a dry, tight scalp. Heavy oil left in for days on a flaky or oily scalp feeds the yeast that causes dandruff and makes it worse.
Can a scalp treatment stop hair fall?
It can help where the shedding is caused by inflammation, and treating a sore or flaking scalp is always worth doing. But most sudden hair fall here is iron deficiency, thyroid problems or an illness a few months earlier — a blood test tells you more than a bottle.
