What Whitening Can and Cannot Do

Surface stains from tea, coffee, paan, tobacco and red foods come off with whitening toothpaste and polishing. That is stain removal rather than whitening, and it works.
Genuine whitening uses peroxide to lighten the tooth itself. Strips, gels and professional treatments do this; toothpaste largely does not.
Whitening does not work on crowns, veneers or fillings. They stay the colour they were made, which is why whitening around existing dental work can look worse rather than better. Ask a dentist first if you have any.
Teeth are not naturally white. Natural enamel is slightly yellow or grey, and the dentine underneath is yellow. There is a limit to what any treatment reaches.
A grey or single dark tooth usually indicates something inside the tooth and needs a dentist rather than a whitening kit.

Using Whitening Products Safely

See a dentist first if you have gum disease, decay, sensitivity or any dental work.
Follow the times exactly. Leaving a strip on longer does not whiten more; it causes sensitivity and gum irritation.
Keep gel off the gums. Peroxide on gum tissue burns and turns it white temporarily.
Expect sensitivity. It is common, it is temporary, and a sensitive-teeth toothpaste for a fortnight beforehand reduces it considerably.
Do not whiten continuously. A course, then a break of several months.
Avoid staining foods for 48 hours afterwards, when teeth are most porous.

Things That Damage Enamel
Avoid the home remedies. Baking soda used aggressively, lemon juice, vinegar and activated charcoal all abrade or dissolve enamel — and enamel does not grow back. Thinner enamel exposes more of the yellow dentine underneath, so these methods make teeth darker over time while feeling like they are working.
Highly abrasive whitening toothpastes do the same thing more slowly. Check for an RDA rating and avoid anything that feels gritty.

Most dentists advise against it. It is abrasive, there is no good evidence it whitens, and it can wear enamel — which makes teeth yellower permanently.
Why are my teeth sensitive after whitening?
Peroxide temporarily opens tiny channels in the enamel. It settles within a few days. Use a sensitivity toothpaste and take a break between courses.
