The brown shade in Dexe’s hair colour shampoo line. It is used like a shampoo — lathered in, left on the hair for a few minutes, then rinsed — but it is a colourant, and it behaves like one. 400ml bottle, for men and women.

Brown is the more forgiving choice of the two shades Dexe makes. Where a black shampoo dye can look flat and obviously dyed on a head with a lot of grey, a brown blends more naturally with what is left of the natural colour.

It is sold in a shampoo bottle and used like one, but the product is a colourant. It works by depositing dye onto the hair while it sits, which is why it needs five to fifteen minutes on the head rather than the thirty seconds of an ordinary wash, and why gloves are supplied.

That means it carries every precaution a hair dye carries.

Allergy Alert — Do the 48-Hour Test Every Time

1. Put a small amount behind the ear or on the inner elbow and let it dry uncovered.
2. Leave it 48 hours without washing the area.
3. If there is any redness, itching, burning, swelling or rash at any point, do not use the product.

Do this before every application, not only the first. Dye allergy can appear suddenly after years of trouble-free use, and each reaction is more severe than the last. In rare cases it swells the face and airway badly enough to need hospital treatment.
