Baby Skin Is Not Small Adult Skin

• It is about 20% thinner, and the barrier that keeps water in and irritants out is still developing through the first year.

• It absorbs more of what is put on it, relative to body size, which is why fragrance-free and dye-free genuinely matter here even if you would not bother for yourself.

• It loses water faster, so it dries out quickly in air conditioning and in winter.

• Fewer ingredients is better. A short ingredient list is the single most useful thing to look for on a baby product.

Bathing a Baby

• Two or three baths a week is plenty for a young baby. Daily bathing dries the skin, and a top-and-tail wash covers the rest.

• Lukewarm, around 37°C. Test with your elbow or wrist, not your hand.

• Five to ten minutes. Longer and the skin starts to lose moisture rather than gain it.

• A small amount of a mild, tear-free wash, or plain water for a newborn.

• Pat dry, especially the creases — neck, armpits, groin, behind the knees. Damp folds are where rashes start.

• Moisturise within three minutes of lifting the baby out, while the skin is still damp.

• Never leave a baby alone in the bath, even for a moment. A baby can drown in a very small depth of water and in complete silence.

A Note on Talcum Powder

Powder is traditional here and worth thinking about twice. Inhaled powder is a genuine risk to small lungs, and it cakes in damp skin folds where it can make a rash worse rather than better. If you use it, shake it into your own hand away from the baby’s face, then apply — and for nappy rash, a barrier cream does the job better.

How often should I bath my baby?

Two or three times a week for a young baby, with a daily wash of the face, neck, hands and nappy area. Older babies who crawl and eat with enthusiasm usually need more.

Is baby oil good for massage?

Massage itself is genuinely good for babies. Use a light, fragrance-free oil, warm it in your hands first, and patch test on a small area a day before. Avoid the face and keep oil away from the mouth and eyes.

What should I use for nappy rash?

A zinc-based barrier cream at every change, more frequent changes, and some time with the nappy off. For a rash that is spreading, blistering, weeping or comes with a fever, see a doctor rather than trying another cream.
