Why Baby Skin Needs Different Products

A newborn’s skin is around thinner than an adult’s and its barrier is still developing, so it loses water faster and absorbs more of whatever is applied to it. That is the practical reason to prefer a short ingredient list and a mild formula on an infant — not because gentle sounds nicer, but because more of the product gets through.

Babies also do not need bathing every day. Two or three baths a week with topping and tailing in between is enough for most infants in the first months, and over-washing is a common cause of dryness.

How to Use

1. Fill the bath to about 10cm and check the temperature — roughly 37°C, tested with your elbow.
2. Wet the baby, then work a small amount of wash into a light lather with your hand.
3. Clean the body, leaving the face to be wiped with plain water and cotton wool.
4. Rinse thoroughly. Residue left in skin folds is a common cause of irritation.
5. Lift the baby out, pat dry — do not rub — and pay attention to the neck, armpits and groin creases.

Bath Safety

• Never leave a baby alone in the bath, not even for a second. An infant can drown in a few centimetres of water and it happens silently. If you must answer the door or the phone, take the baby with you.
• Run cold water first, then add hot, and test the temperature with your elbow or wrist — around 37°C. Hands are poor thermometers.
• Keep one hand supporting the baby at all times.
• Wet bathroom floors and soapy babies are slippery. Have the towel within reach before you start.
• Bath seats and rings are not safety devices. They tip.

Patch Test First

Before using any new product on a baby, apply a small amount to a patch of skin on the inner arm and leave it for 24 hours. Redness, bumps, or the baby scratching at the area means stop.

Introduce one new product at a time. If three are started together and the skin reacts, there is no way to know which caused it. Check with your doctor before using anything new on a baby with eczema or broken skin.
