Beta-sitosterol has somewhat more consistent evidence for symptom scores. Zinc is concentrated in the prostate and is genuinely required for normal function, though supplementing it is not shown to treat anything.

It is generally well tolerated, which is a fair reason many men try it. It is not a substitute for being examined.

Other Cautions

• Saw palmetto has a mild antiplatelet effect. Ask your doctor if you take a blood thinner, and stop it about two weeks before surgery.
• It may interact with hormonal medicines and with finasteride or dutasteride — tell your doctor if you take either.
• Do not take zinc supplements on top without checking the total. Long-term high zinc causes copper deficiency.
