Babies breathe mainly through the nose and cannot clear it themselves. A blockage that is a mild nuisance to an adult stops a baby feeding and wrecks their sleep, so clearing it is often the most useful thing you can do for an unsettled infant with a cold.

How to Use

1. Soften thick mucus first with a drop of saline in each nostril, and wait a minute. This does most of the work.
2. Hold the baby upright, or lay them back with the head slightly raised.
3. Rest the tip at the opening of the nostril — never push it inside.
4. Apply gentle suction. Stop if the baby is distressed.
5. Wipe the tip and repeat on the other side.
6. Use before feeds and before sleep, and no more than a few times a day.

Cleaning and Sterilising

• Wash in warm soapy water before first use and after every use, then rinse thoroughly.
• Sterilise by the method your equipment supports — steam steriliser, cold-water sterilising solution, or five minutes in boiling water. Check the item is boil-safe first.
• Let it air-dry on a clean surface rather than rubbing it with a tea towel.
• Store somewhere clean and dry, not loose in a nappy bag.
• Replace anything cracked, split, discoloured or chewed through. Damaged surfaces hold bacteria and can break off.

When It Is Not Enough

An aspirator eases a symptom; it does not treat anything. Get medical advice if the baby is under three months and has a fever, is breathing fast or working hard to breathe, is drawing in below the ribs, is refusing feeds, or has fewer wet nappies than usual.
