What 3D Wings Add

A flat wing folds under the underwear and sticks. A 3D or contoured wing is shaped to curve up around the sides of the body rather than lying completely flat.

• It builds a raised edge along both sides, which is a physical barrier against side leaks rather than just an anchor for the pad.
• It holds the pad in position more firmly, which matters most when you are moving — walking, on a rickshaw, on stairs.
• It is the feature that most reliably separates a “premium” pad from a basic one, and unlike most premium features it does something you can feel.

Ultra Thin, and What Thickness Really Tells You

Thin does not mean less absorbent. A modern pad gets its capacity from super absorbent polymer in the core, not from bulk, so a 2mm pad can hold as much as a thick old-style one.

What thinness genuinely gives you is less visible under fitted clothes and less to chafe against. What it does not give you is a reason to leave it on longer.

Why the Cotton Matters in This Climate

The top sheet is what touches your skin for hours at a time. Cotton breathes; a plastic-feeling top sheet traps heat and moisture, and trapped heat and moisture is what causes period rash in Bangladesh far more often than any hygiene failure does.

On a 290mm pad worn through a long day or overnight, that difference is not cosmetic.

What the Sizes and Numbers Actually Mean

Pad packs are labelled in two different ways and shops rarely explain either.

• The millimetre number is the length of the pad, end to end. Roughly: 240mm is a regular daytime pad, 280 to 290mm is a large, 317 to 340mm is an extra-large or overnight pad. A longer pad is not more absorbent by itself — it covers more, which is what stops back leakage when you are lying down.

Match the pad to the day, not to the packet. Most people need a heavier pad for the first two days and a lighter one after that, and buying one size for the whole period means being uncomfortable for half of it.

How Often to Change a Pad

1. Change every four to six hours, even on a light day and even if the pad still looks usable. That is a hygiene interval, not an absorbency one.
2. On a heavy day, change more often — every three to four hours is normal for the first two days.
3. Wash your hands before and after. Both times.
4. Wrap the used pad in its wrapper or in paper and put it in a bin. Never flush a pad; it does not break down and it blocks the line.
5. Rinse with plain water and pat dry before the new pad goes on. Soap and intimate washes are not needed and often make irritation worse.
6. Never use two pads at once to make one last longer. It does not work and it traps moisture against the skin.

Toxic shock syndrome is rare with pads — it is mainly associated with tampons left in too long — but a pad worn for many hours in a hot climate is still the main cause of period rash and itching. Sudden high fever, vomiting, dizziness and a sunburn-like rash during a period need emergency medical care, whichever product you are using.

Rash, Itching and Chafing

Period rash is heat and friction, not dirt. In Bangladesh’s climate it is very common and it is worth knowing what actually helps:

• Change more often. A damp pad against skin for six hours is the single biggest cause.
• Try an unscented pad. Perfumed pads smell pleasant in the packet and are a frequent cause of contact irritation in the people who react to them.
• Cotton underwear, not synthetic, and not too tight.
• Rinse with plain water at each change and dry properly before the new pad goes on.
• Plain petroleum jelly or a barrier cream on the chafed area between changes.
• Do not use antiseptic, soap or an intimate wash on broken skin. It stings, it strips the natural protective layer, and it makes the next day worse.

When a Period Needs a Doctor, Not a Bigger Pad

Buying a heavier pad is the right answer to a heavy day. It is the wrong answer to some things, and these are worth knowing:

• Soaking through a pad every hour or two, for several hours in a row. That is medically heavy bleeding and it is a common cause of anaemia here.
• Bleeding for more than seven days every cycle.
• Clots larger than a 10-taka coin, repeatedly.
• Pain that stops you going to work or school, or that painkillers do not touch.
• Bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause.
• Constant tiredness, breathlessness or dizziness during your period — that is what iron deficiency feels like, and it is treatable.

None of these means something is seriously wrong. All of them mean it is worth a doctor’s appointment rather than another year of managing it alone.
