Rajma Khichuri for Baby, 500gm — a locally prepared khichuri mix built on rajma (red kidney beans), rice and lentils, sold for babies from 6 months.
Kidney beans must be cooked thoroughly. Read the cooking section below before the first feed.
Product Overview
Rajma Khichuri is a locally prepared dry mix for babies, built on rajma (red kidney beans) with rice and lentils, in a 500gm pack. It is cooked into a soft khichuri rather than mixed like a cereal powder, and the seller offers it from six months upward.
As a food it makes sense. Beans and lentils together with rice give a baby plant protein, iron and fibre in a form Bangladeshi families already cook and already know how to feed.
Cook It Properly — This Part Matters
Red kidney beans must be fully cooked. Raw and undercooked kidney beans contain a natural compound (phytohaemagglutinin) that causes vomiting and stomach upset, and lightly cooked beans can be worse than raw ones. Thorough boiling destroys it completely.
- Soak the mix if the pack tells you to, and throw the soaking water away.
- Cook in fresh water at a proper rolling boil — not a low warm simmer — until the beans are completely soft and mash easily.
- Mash or blend it smooth for a young baby. Beans need to be soft enough to squash between two fingers.
- Follow the cooking time on the pack. If it does not give one, boil hard for at least ten minutes and then continue until everything is soft.
Cooked properly, this is ordinary safe food. Cooked halfway, it is not — which is the one thing the seller’s own description does not tell you.
Before You Start Solids
Breast milk is the best food for a baby, and for the first six months it is the only food a baby needs. WHO and Bangladesh’s national infant-feeding guidance both recommend exclusive breastfeeding for six months, then breastfeeding alongside solid food up to two years and beyond.
Complementary food is an addition to milk at around six months, not a replacement for it. Starting solids does not mean stopping breastfeeding.
If your baby is under six months, or was born early, or is not gaining weight as expected, talk to a doctor or a health worker before starting any solid food. They can look at your baby; a packet cannot.
This Is Not a Milk Replacement
An infant cereal is a complementary food. It is fed in addition to breast milk or formula, in small amounts, once or twice a day to begin with. Milk stays the main source of nutrition for the whole of the first year.
Filling a baby up on cereal so they take less milk is a common and serious mistake. If your baby is drinking noticeably less milk after starting solids, cut the solids back and speak to a health worker.
Starting Beans With a Baby
Beans and lentils are gassy, and a six-month-old digestive system meets them for the first time here. Start with a teaspoon or two, not a bowl, and give it a few days before increasing. Some wind and a change in stools is normal; persistent crying, a rash or vomiting is not — stop and speak to a doctor.
Mash it far smoother than you think you need to for a young baby. Whole or partly whole beans are a choking risk.
Introducing a New Food
- Start with one or two teaspoons once a day and build up over a week or two.
- Introduce one new food at a time and wait about three days before adding another. If something disagrees with your baby you then know what it was.
- A baby refusing a new food the first few times is normal, not a verdict. It often takes several tries.
- Watch for a rash, swelling around the mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea or wheezing. Stop the food and get medical help if any of these appear, urgently if there is any difficulty breathing.
- Never leave a baby alone while eating, and always feed sitting upright.
Hygiene Matters More Than the Brand
Most feeding-related illness in small children comes from the bowl, the spoon, the water and the hands — not from the food itself. Clean hands, clean utensils, safe water and food eaten fresh do more for your baby than any ingredient list.
Never feed prepared cereal that has been standing at room temperature for more than two hours, and never reheat a bowl your baby has already eaten from.
What This Product Does Not Do
The seller’s description lists a series of health benefits taken from adult nutrition writing — cancer risk, cholesterol, blood sugar. None of that belongs on a baby food page and none of it is repeated here. Rajma is a nourishing bean. It is not a treatment for anything, for a baby or for an adult.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is six months really old enough for beans?
Well-cooked, well-mashed pulses are a normal complementary food from around six months, and khichuri is one of the standard first foods in Bangladesh. The conditions are that it is cooked through and mashed smooth, and that you start with a very small amount.
How long does the cooked khichuri keep?
Feed it fresh, within about two hours. Throw away anything left in your baby’s bowl. Cooked pulses left standing warm are a common cause of stomach upset.
Can older children and adults eat it?
Yes. It is khichuri. Cook it thicker and season it for the rest of the family — but keep the baby’s portion unsalted.
My baby is younger than the age on the pack. Can I still start?
Please don’t, and please ask a doctor first. The age on the pack is about how ready a baby’s gut and swallowing are, not about size or appetite. Solids before six months are recommended only where a health worker has advised it for that particular baby.
How should I store it after opening?
Tightly closed, somewhere cool and dry, and used within the two to four weeks the pack states. Always use a dry spoon. Do not put the dry powder in the fridge.
