Godrej Nupur is henna leaf, dried and finely milled — nothing else. It colours hair a natural reddish-brown, conditions as it does so, and is equally used for mehendi designs on hands and feet.

Henna works differently from a chemical dye. Lawsone, the pigment in the leaf, binds to the keratin in hair rather than penetrating it under the action of a developer. That means it does no structural damage, it is gentler on the scalp, and it also means the colour it gives is the colour henna gives — you cannot choose the shade.

Important — “Black Henna” Is Not Henna

Pure henna, which is what this is, is orange-red. It cannot produce black. Anything sold as “black henna” that stains dark in an hour contains added PPD, and PPD applied to skin at dye strength causes severe chemical burns and permanent scarring, especially in the mehendi context. Every year people are injured by it.

Pure henna like this one is the safe choice, and its colour is the honest one.

Strand Test Before You Commit

Henna is effectively permanent — it does not wash out and it cannot be lifted with bleach without the hair turning an unpredictable colour. Mix a small amount, apply it to a hidden strand, leave the full time, rinse and look at it in daylight. On black hair you should expect a warm reddish glint rather than a visible colour change; on grey or light hair the colour will be strong and orange-red.

How to Use — Hair

1. Mix the powder with warm water, or with cooled black tea for a deeper tone, to a thick yoghurt consistency.
2. Cover and leave it to stand for 4 to 8 hours. The pigment needs time to release; using it immediately gives a weak result.
3. Wear gloves. Henna stains hands, nails and every surface it touches.
4. Apply to clean, dry hair in sections, from roots to ends.
5. Cover with a cap and leave 1 to 3 hours.
6. Rinse with plain water until it runs clear. Leave the shampoo until the next day — the colour continues to develop and deepen for 24 to 48 hours.

Safety

• Keep it away from the eyes. Never use henna on eyebrows or eyelashes, and rinse immediately with plenty of clean water if paste gets into an eye. Working along the hairline is where this most often happens — have a damp cloth to hand.
• Do not apply it to broken, sore or irritated skin.
• Patch test on the inner elbow 24 hours before the first use. Pure henna reactions are uncommon but not unknown.
• Wear gloves. Henna stains skin, nails, fabric and basins.
• Keep out of reach of children — the powder is fine and easily inhaled.
• People with G6PD deficiency should avoid henna on skin. Ask a doctor if this applies to you or your child.

Henna and Chemical Dye

They do not mix well. Do not apply a chemical colour over henna, or henna over a fresh chemical colour, without a strand test — the results range from muddy green to hair that breaks. Leave several weeks between the two, and test first every time.
