How to Shave Without Wrecking Your Face

Soften the beard first. Shave after a shower, or hold a warm damp towel to your face for a minute. Dry hair is about as tough as copper wire of the same thickness.

Apply the cream, foam or gel and give it a full minute before you start. Most people begin too soon.

• Shave with the grain, in short light strokes.

• Do not press. Pressure causes nicks and irritation — not a blunt blade, and not the razor.

Rinse the blade every few strokes so it does not clog.

Finish with cool water, pat dry rather than rubbing, and moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp.

What Aftershave Actually Does

Classic aftershave is mostly alcohol and fragrance. The sting is not the product working — it is alcohol on skin that has just been scraped. It does disinfect small nicks and it feels cool, but it also strips oil and dries the skin, which for many men makes flaking and tightness worse over time. If your skin is dry or sensitive, an alcohol-free balm will treat you better, and it is the change that fixes most post-shave discomfort.

Hygiene

Do not share razors, blades or trimmer heads. Anything that breaks skin can carry infection.

Rinse and dry a razor after every use and stand it where air reaches it. A wet blade in a closed cabinet blunts and grows bacteria.

Oil a trimmer blade every few uses. It is the one step everyone skips and the one that decides whether a trimmer lasts one year or five.

Never shave over a spot, a mole or broken skin.
