Shampoo the Scalp, Not the Length

The single most useful correction in hair care. Shampoo is a scalp product. It is there to remove oil, sweat, dust and product build-up from the skin — and the lengths get cleaned perfectly well by the lather running down as you rinse.

• Scrubbing shampoo through the ends tangles them and causes breakage, and it strips hair that was not dirty in the first place.

• Massage with fingertips, never nails. Scratching breaks the scalp’s skin, which is how an itch becomes an infection.

• Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Residue is what leaves hair limp and the scalp itchy.

• Condition the mid-lengths and ends only, never the roots.

How Often, in This Climate

Every day or every other day is fine here with a gentle shampoo, and it is what most people’s scalps prefer — sweat, dust and pollution are harder on a scalp than washing is. Very dry, curly or coloured hair generally does better washed two or three times a week.

Lukewarm water, never hot. Hot water roughens the cuticle and dries the scalp, and it strips colour faster than anything else.

Sulphates, Clarifying and Build-Up

• Sulphates are the strong detergents that make a shampoo lather hard. They clean very effectively — sometimes too effectively for dry, curly or colour-treated hair, which is where sulphate-free formulas earn their place.

• Sulphate-free is not automatically better. On an oily scalp it can leave residue, and residue itches.

• A clarifying shampoo once a month removes the build-up of silicones, oils and styling products that makes hair go flat and stop responding. It is the fix people reach for new products to solve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing shampoo regularly help?

Hair does not “get used to” a shampoo — that is a myth. What does happen is build-up, which a clarifying wash clears. Change shampoo when your scalp’s needs change, not on a schedule.

Will an anti-hair-fall shampoo stop hair falling?

It reduces breakage, which for many people is most of what they see in the drain. It does not affect hair falling from the root — if strands have a small white bulb at the end, get an iron and thyroid test rather than another bottle.

Is baby shampoo gentler for adults?

It is milder, and it is formulated not to sting eyes — but it is also less effective at removing the oil and pollution an adult scalp collects in a Dhaka day. Gentle adult shampoo is usually the better answer.

How do I know the product is genuine?

Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.

How long does delivery take?
