What Men Actually Need to Know

Most men’s grooming is sold on adjectives. Three pieces of information are worth more than all of them:

• Razor bumps are ingrown hairs, not an infection. They happen when a hair is cut below the skin surface and grows back into it, and they are far more common with coarse or curly beard hair. The fix is to stop shaving against the grain, stop stretching the skin tight, and use a fresh blade with fewer passes. A slightly less close shave with no bumps is a better shave.

• Stripping oil makes skin oilier. The tight, squeaky feeling after washing is a stripped skin barrier, not cleanliness, and the skin compensates by producing more oil over the following weeks. Gentle twice a day plus a light moisturiser genuinely reduces oiliness.

• Beard problems are skin problems. The itch and the flakes come from the skin underneath, which is why beard oil goes on the skin and not just on the hair, and why soap and face wash are the wrong things to wash a beard with.

An Honest Word on “Fairness”

No face wash makes skin lighter. It is on the face for thirty seconds and rinsed down the sink. What products in this category genuinely do is clean off oil and pollution, hydrate, and — where the formula contains vitamin C or niacinamide — fade uneven patches over weeks. The single most effective thing for a brighter, more even complexion is daily sunscreen, because it stops further darkening.

Genuine Products

Much of this catalogue is imported, and imported shelves are where fakes and repacks appear. Whoever you buy from, these are worth checking:

• The seal. An intact shrink wrap or safety ring is what tells you a product has not been opened.

• The batch number and expiry printed on the pack itself, not on a sticker over it. A sticker covering the original printing is the commonest sign of a repack.

• A price far below everyone else’s is information — sometimes a genuine clearance, often a fake or something close to expiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change a razor blade?

Most cartridges give five to seven comfortable shaves. A blade that tugs is a blade that will leave you sore — and corrosion from being left wet in a closed cabinet blunts blades faster than shaving does. Rinse, shake dry and stand it in the air.

Can I use my face wash on my beard?

Better not. Face wash and soap are harsher than beard wash and leave beard hair coarse and the skin underneath flaking. A beard wash or a gentle shampoo two or three times a week is the right routine.

Do beard growth products work?

No product makes a beard grow where the follicles are not there — that is genetics. What beard oils, balms and brushes genuinely do is soften the hair, calm the skin underneath and make what you have look considerably better.

How do I know the product is genuine?

Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.

How long does delivery take?
