Description

Product Overview

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the central herbs of ayurveda, traditionally taken as a restorative and a calmative. This is the root powder in a 75gm pack rather than a capsule, which is the traditional form — usually stirred into warm milk or water, often with a little honey, at night.

What the Evidence Actually Shows

Ashwagandha is unusual among herbal supplements in that it has been studied reasonably well, so it is possible to be specific.

  • Stress and anxiety — the strongest area. Several controlled trials report modest reductions in stress scores and in cortisol over 6-8 weeks. The studies are small and mostly short, but they point the same way.
  • Sleep — some evidence of improved sleep quality, which may follow from the same effect.
  • Strength and recovery — a few small trials in men doing resistance training show modest improvements. Modest is the operative word.

What it does not do is treat anxiety disorders, depression or any medical condition. If stress has reached the point of affecting your sleep, appetite or work for weeks at a time, that needs a doctor rather than a herb.

Cautions Worth Reading

  • Thyroid. Ashwagandha can raise thyroid hormone levels. If you have a thyroid condition or take levothyroxine, do not take it without asking your doctor.
  • Pregnancy. Do not take it. It is traditionally avoided in pregnancy and there is no safety data.
  • Liver. There have been case reports of liver injury linked to ashwagandha supplements. Rare, but real — stop and see a doctor if you develop yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, or pain under the right ribs.
  • Sedatives and thyroid medicine. It may add to the effect of sedatives. Tell your doctor you are taking it.
  • It is a nightshade-family plant; avoid it if you react to that family.

How It Is Traditionally Taken

  1. Half to one teaspoon of the powder, once or twice a day, or as the pack directs.
  2. Stir into warm milk or water. A little honey or jaggery makes the taste manageable — it is genuinely bitter and earthy.
  3. Many people take it in the evening, since the calming effect suits the end of the day.
  4. Give it six to eight weeks before judging. Adaptogens do not work like a painkiller.

What the Evidence Actually Says

Herbal supplements sit in an awkward place: some have real, measured effects, many have small ones, and a few have none beyond what people expect from taking them. The marketing rarely distinguishes between the three.

“Natural” does not mean “safe” or “gentle”. Plants make powerful compounds — that is why so many medicines came from them in the first place — and a herb strong enough to have an effect is strong enough to interact with a medicine. Herbal products are also less tightly regulated than medicines, so what is in the bottle varies more between brands than it does for a pharmaceutical.

This Is a Supplement, Not a Medicine

A dietary supplement is a food product. It is not a medicine, it has not been through the testing a medicine goes through, and it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Supplement labels use health language — “supports”, “helps maintain”, “promotes” — precisely because they are not permitted to claim treatment. Read them that way. If a listing anywhere promises that a capsule will fix a medical condition, that promise is not one the product can keep.

What a supplement can honestly do is fill a gap in your diet. That is worth something, and it is a smaller thing than most packaging implies.

Talk to a Doctor First

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before you start, particularly if you:

  • take any prescribed medicine — supplements interfere with medicines more often than people expect
  • are being treated for a heart, liver, kidney, thyroid or blood condition
  • have diabetes
  • are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
  • have surgery or a dental procedure coming up

Never stop or reduce a prescribed medicine in order to take a supplement instead. That is the single most dangerous thing anyone does with a product like this, and it is what the marketing language quietly invites.

Storage

  • Keep the container tightly closed, somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not store it in a bathroom. Heat and humidity break supplements down faster than anything else, and a Dhaka bathroom is the worst place in the house for them.
  • Leave the desiccant sachet in the bottle. It is there to keep moisture out, not by mistake.
  • Softgels and fish oils are best kept in a fridge in hot weather — they go rancid otherwise.
  • Keep it out of reach of children.
  • Do not use it after the expiry date, and throw it away if the capsules smell strongly off, have stuck together or changed colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Powder or capsules — which is better?

Same herb. Powder is traditional, cheaper per gram and lets you adjust the dose; capsules avoid the taste and are easier to be consistent with. Choose on which one you will actually keep taking.

How long can I take it for?

Most studies run 8 to 12 weeks. Taking a break after a few months is a reasonable habit with any adaptogen, and it also tells you whether it was doing anything.

Will it make me sleepy during the day?

Some people find it mildly calming. If it does that to you, move the dose to the evening.

How long before I notice anything?

Honestly: with most supplements, you do not notice anything, because filling a nutritional gap feels like nothing. Where there is a measurable effect it usually takes weeks to months. Be sceptical of anything you feel within a day or two.

How do I check the pack is in date?

The expiry date is printed on the bottle or the base of the box. Check it as soon as your order arrives. If it is unreadable or close to expiry, message us and we will replace it.
