Using Oil on a Baby

• Warm a little in your palms first rather than pouring it straight onto the baby.
• Keep it away from the face, and particularly away from the nose and mouth — oils can be inhaled, and that is a genuine risk with infants rather than a theoretical one.
• An oiled baby is very slippery. Have a towel down and never carry a freshly oiled infant across a hard floor.
• Massage after a bath and before a feed, in a warm room, when the baby is settled and alert.
• Stop if the baby turns away, cries or arches the back. Those are the signals that the massage is finished.

Baby Massage — Why It Is Worth Doing

Beyond the skin, regular massage is one of the simplest ways to settle an unsettled baby. It gives sustained skin contact, it is predictable, and it tends to help with sleep. Ten minutes in a warm room after a bath is enough. Follow the baby’s cues rather than a routine — the point is the contact, not the technique.
