The value of a jar is convenience at the moment you need it: travelling, visiting, a day when there is no time to cook. Keeping one or two in the cupboard is sensible; living on them is not.

Before You Start Solids

Breast milk is the best food for a baby, and for the first six months it is the only food a baby needs. WHO and Bangladesh’s national infant-feeding guidance both recommend exclusive breastfeeding for six months, then breastfeeding alongside solid food up to two years and beyond.

Complementary food is an addition to milk at around six months, not a replacement for it. Starting solids does not mean stopping breastfeeding.

If your baby is under six months, or was born early, or is not gaining weight as expected, talk to a doctor or a health worker before starting any solid food. They can look at your baby; a packet cannot.

This Is Not a Milk Replacement

An infant cereal is a complementary food. It is fed in addition to breast milk or formula, in small amounts, once or twice a day to begin with. Milk stays the main source of nutrition for the whole of the first year.

Filling a baby up on cereal so they take less milk is a common and serious mistake. If your baby is drinking noticeably less milk after starting solids, cut the solids back and speak to a health worker.

Egg custard means egg and milk — two of the more common food allergens. If your baby has had neither, introduce each on its own, a few days apart, before offering a food that contains both. Read the allergen statement on the jar.

Current guidance is that egg is introduced from around six months rather than delayed, and that well-cooked egg in a product like this is the usual way to do it. Speak to a doctor first if there is a strong family history of allergy.

How to Serve It

1. Check the seal is unbroken and the lid button pops when you open it. Do not use a jar that does not pop.
2. Spoon the amount your baby will eat into a separate bowl.
3. Do not feed straight from the jar if you plan to keep the rest — saliva off the spoon spoils what is left.
4. Serve at room temperature, or stand the closed jar in warm water for a few minutes. Stir and test the temperature.
5. Once opened, keep the remainder covered in the fridge and use it within 24 hours, or as the jar states.

Hygiene Matters More Than the Brand

Most feeding-related illness in small children comes from the bowl, the spoon, the water and the hands — not from the food itself. Clean hands, clean utensils, safe water and food eaten fresh do more for your baby than any ingredient list.

Never feed prepared cereal that has been standing at room temperature for more than two hours, and never reheat a bowl your baby has already eaten from.

Take it out of the glass jar into a bowl first, and stir thoroughly afterwards — microwaves heat unevenly and leave hot spots. Always test the temperature on your wrist.

Is it a dessert or a meal?

A dessert. Treat it as an occasional sweet course after a savoury food, not as a meal in itself.

My baby is younger than the age on the pack. Can I still start?

Please don’t, and please ask a doctor first. The age on the pack is about how ready a baby’s gut and swallowing are, not about size or appetite. Solids before six months are recommended only where a health worker has advised it for that particular baby.

What if my baby reacts to it?

Stop feeding it and speak to a doctor. Get help urgently if there is swelling around the mouth, a spreading rash, repeated vomiting or any difficulty breathing. Introducing one new food at a time makes it much easier to tell what caused a reaction.
