Getting the Basics Right

Condoms are highly effective used correctly and much less so when they are not. The failures are nearly always avoidable:

• Check the expiry date on the foil, every time. Latex degrades, and an out-of-date condom is materially more likely to break.

• Open the foil at the notch, with your fingers. Teeth, scissors and long nails cause tears you will not see.

• Pinch the tip — trapped air is one of the commonest causes of a burst — and use it from the start, not partway through.

• Water-based lubricant only with latex. Petroleum jelly, baby oil, lotion and coconut oil weaken latex and cause failures.

• Never two at once, and never wash and reuse one.

Choosing a Size and a Type

Fit matters more than most people realise. Too tight is more likely to break, too loose is more likely to slip. Brands publish a nominal width in millimetres — compare that rather than the name on the box, and if one brand is uncomfortable, try another rather than giving up on condoms. The variants are about sensation rather than protection: ultra thin for closeness, dotted and ribbed for texture, flavoured for oral use, delay for a mild numbing effect. • Check the website address before entering anything personal. Before typing a card number, a wallet PIN or an OTP, look at the address bar and confirm you are on the real site over a secure connection. Misspelled domains are the standard trick.

• Never share an OTP, PIN or password — not with a caller claiming to be from a courier, a bank, a marketplace, or from us. We will never ask for one.

• Buy from a source you can identify. A real shop has an address, a phone number, a return policy and a person you can reach. A seller with none of those, taking payment only by personal mobile transfer, is a reason to walk away.

• Be careful with health claims here. Anything promising a guaranteed cure, an instant result or a permanent change is selling a story.
