Reading the Pack

• Check salt per 100g. Over 1.5g is high. A single large sharing bag can carry most of an adult’s recommended daily salt.

• Baked is not automatically low in salt — it usually has less fat and often more salt to compensate for flavour.

• Read the allergen line. Milk in cheese flavours, wheat in many seasonings, and soy across the category.

• Check for animal-derived flavourings if that matters to you. Imported crisps frequently use them and the front of the pack does not say so.

• Compare per 100g, not per bag. Bag sizes vary enormously between markets.

Why the Bag Is Full of Air

It is not a trick, or not only a trick. The gas in a crisp packet is nitrogen, not air — it displaces oxygen, which is what makes fat go rancid, and it cushions the crisps in transit. That is why a packet stays crisp for months and why it goes soft within an hour of being opened.

Keeping Them Edible in This Climate

• Humidity is the enemy. An open packet goes soft within an hour or two here, not a day.

• Clip or seal the bag properly, or decant into an airtight container immediately.

• Do not refrigerate. Condensation makes them soft faster than the counter does.

• Buy the size you will finish. A large sharing bag opened for one person is a false economy.

• Store away from heat and light — the oil in crisps goes rancid, and a hot cupboard speeds it up.

Yes, and it is a good sign — the nitrogen keeps them fresh and protects them in transit. A packet that has gone flat may have a hole in it, and those crisps will be soft.

Can I make soft crisps crisp again?

A few minutes in a low oven or an air fryer usually revives them. It does nothing for staleness once the oil has turned.

Are baked crisps a healthier choice?

Lower in fat, usually higher in salt, and still a snack. If you are watching salt, compare the per-100g figures rather than trusting the word “baked”.

How much shelf life will it have?

We stock to arrive well within date and do not knowingly ship anything close to expiry. If you need a specific minimum for a particular order, ask before placing it and we will check the batch.
