Brightening covers the products aimed at dullness, uneven tone, dark spots and pigmentation — vitamin C serums, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, exfoliating acids and the creams built around them.

An Honest Word Before You Spend

This is the category with the most marketing and the least honesty in it, so here is the straight version.

Nothing changes your natural skin colour, and nothing should. What these products genuinely do is fade uneven patches — sun spots, marks left by acne, melasma — so that your tone becomes more even. That is a real, worthwhile and visible result, and it is different from becoming lighter.

Sunscreen is the actual brightening product. Every mark you are trying to fade is deepened by daily sun exposure. Without sunscreen, a serum is bailing out a boat with the tap running.

Take unregulated lightening creams seriously as a risk. Products sold without an ingredient list can contain mercury or strong steroids. Both cause lasting harm — thinning skin, rebound darkening and, with mercury, kidney damage. Buy from brands that publish what is in the tube.

The Ingredients That Actually Do Something

Vitamin C — antioxidant, fades marks, works well under sunscreen. Unstable: buy small, keep it dark, replace it when it turns brown.

Niacinamide — the most tolerant of the group. Evens tone, helps oil control, rarely irritates. A sensible starting point.

Alpha arbutin and kojic acid — targeted at pigment specifically.

AHAs and BHAs — exfoliate the surface so marks fade faster. Two or three times a week, never daily.

Retinoids — the strongest evidence for texture and marks, and the most likely to irritate. Start low, start slow, and never skip sunscreen.

Using Them Without Wrecking Your Barrier

One active at a time, two to four weeks apart. Starting vitamin C, an acid and a retinoid in the same week is the commonest cause of a face that stings at everything. Give any of them eight to twelve weeks before judging — pigment fades slowly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this make my skin fairer?

No, and we would not sell it as if it would. It evens your tone by fading patches that are darker than the rest of your face. That is what these ingredients do.

How long until dark spots fade?

Eight to twelve weeks for post-acne marks with consistent use and daily sunscreen. Melasma is slower, often recurs, and is worth seeing a dermatologist about.

Can I use vitamin C and niacinamide together?

Yes. The old advice that they cancel each other out came from a laboratory study using raw ingredients at high heat, and it does not reflect modern formulas. Many products contain both.

How do I know the product is genuine?

Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.

How much shelf life will it have?

We stock to arrive well within date and do not knowingly ship anything close to expiry. If you need a specific minimum for a particular order, ask before placing it and we will check the batch.
