Dandruff Is Not Dry Scalp

This single correction fixes more dandruff than any product does. Dandruff is usually a reaction to Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone’s scalp and feeds on its natural oils. The flaking is inflammation, not dehydration.

• More oil often makes it worse, because oil is what the yeast feeds on. Heavy oiling for days at a time is a common cause of a flare.

• Dry scalp flakes are small, white and dry; dandruff flakes are larger, often yellowish and greasy, and usually come with itching and sometimes redness.

Stress, heat, sweat and infrequent washing all make it worse — which is why it flares in Bangladeshi summers.

Using an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo Properly

• Apply it to the scalp, not the lengths, and massage with fingertips rather than nails.

• Leave it on for three to five minutes. This is the step everyone skips and the reason most people conclude the shampoo “did not work” — the active needs contact time.

• Two or three times a week while flaking is active, then once a week to keep it away.

Use a normal shampoo in between if you wash more often.

• Rinse until the water runs clear. Residue itches.

• Alternate two different actives — for example zinc pyrithione and ketoconazole — rather than using one indefinitely.

When It Is Not Dandruff

See a doctor if you have redness with greasy yellow scale spreading to the eyebrows or sides of the nose, which is seborrhoeic dermatitis; thick, silvery, well-defined plaques, which may be psoriasis; hair loss in patches with scaling; or a scalp that is sore, weeping or crusted. These are treated differently and an ordinary anti-dandruff shampoo will not resolve them.

Why does my dandruff keep coming back?

Because the yeast is a normal resident of your scalp — treatment controls it rather than eliminating it. That is why a maintenance wash once a week is part of the answer rather than a sign of failure.

Will oiling help?

Usually not, and it often makes it worse. A light oil for an hour before washing can soothe a dry, tight scalp; heavy oil left in overnight on a flaky scalp feeds the yeast.

Is dandruff contagious?

No. It is a reaction to something that already lives on everyone’s skin, and you cannot catch it from a comb or a pillow.

How do I know the product is genuine?
