Hawthorn (Crataegus species) has been used in European and North American herbal medicine for centuries, principally for the heart. This is NOW Foods’ 540mg berry preparation in 100 vegetarian capsules.

The berries contain flavonoids and oligomeric proanthocyanidins — the antioxidant compounds the plant is studied for.

Important — Interactions With Heart Medicine

Hawthorn is one of the herbs most likely to interact with prescribed medicine, because it acts on the same systems those medicines act on. Do not start it without speaking to your doctor if you take:

• Digoxin — hawthorn may add to its effect, and digoxin has a narrow safety margin
• Beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers or any blood pressure medicine — the effects can add up and drop your pressure too far
• Nitrates for angina
