Getting Shine Out of Any Hair

• Finish with a cool rinse. Cold water closes the cuticle and the difference is visible immediately.
• Do not over-wash. Stripping every trace of natural oil leaves hair dull, not clean.
• Brush from the ends up with a smooth-tipped brush. Dragging from the roots roughens the surface.
• Keep the heat down. Heat-damaged cuticle scales stand up permanently, and standing scales scatter light.

How to Use a Hair Mask

1. Shampoo first and squeeze the hair out. A mask cannot get into hair that is already full of water.
2. Work it through the mid-lengths and ends. Keep it off the scalp — this is for the hair, and roots do not need it.
3. Leave it the time the pack says, usually 3 to 10 minutes. Longer does not do more; hair takes up what it can and the rest rinses away.
4. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Anything left behind weighs hair down and makes it look greasy by the next day.
