La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 is an anti-ageing serum for face and neck combining pure retinol with a gradual-release retinol, alongside vitamin B3 (niacinamide).

The two-form retinol approach is the interesting part. Pure retinol acts directly; the encapsulated gradual-release form is delivered slowly over hours. The result is meant to be the efficacy of retinol with less of the irritation that makes people abandon it in the first fortnight — and the niacinamide alongside further calms the skin. That combination is why La Roche-Posay is able to describe this as suitable for sensitive skin, which is not a claim most retinol serums make.

Important — Pregnancy and Retinoids

Do not use retinoid products if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding without medical advice. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives, and oral vitamin A derivatives are known to cause birth defects. Topical absorption is low, but the standard clinical advice is to avoid them in pregnancy rather than weigh the odds.

Also worth knowing before you start:

• Purging is normal, irritation is not. Skin often gets worse for two to six weeks before it improves, as existing congestion is brought to the surface. Persistent burning, peeling and raw patches mean you are using too much, too often.
• Start two or three nights a week and build up. Nightly from day one is the most common mistake.
• Do not layer with other retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or strong exfoliating acids in the same routine unless a doctor has told you to.
• Apply to dry skin — on damp skin, absorption increases and so does irritation.

How to Use

1. Evening only. Retinol degrades in light and increases sun sensitivity.
2. Apply to clean, completely dry skin — damp skin increases absorption and irritation.
3. A pea-sized amount covers the whole face. More is not better.
4. Include the neck, where sun damage shows early and is often ignored.
5. Follow with moisturiser. Applying moisturiser first, then retinol, reduces irritation further if you are sensitive.
6. Start twice a week and build up over six to eight weeks.

Sun Protection Is Not Optional With This

This product increases the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Used without daily sunscreen it can leave skin worse than it started — more pigmentation, not less, because UV exposure is what drives most of the discolouration these products are bought to treat.

• Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, SPF 30 or higher, and reapply through the day when outdoors.
• Use around two finger-lengths for face and neck. Under-applying is why sunscreen so often underperforms its rating.
• The sensitivity continues for about a week after you stop using the product.

Patch Test First

Before using a new active on your face, try it on a small area — the inner forearm or just below the jaw — and leave it for 24 hours. Mild tingling on application is common with acids and settles; stinging, burning, redness that spreads, or itching that persists is not, and means the product is not for you.

Introduce one new product at a time. If three go on together and skin reacts, there is no way to tell which one caused it.

How long before I see a difference?

Texture and radiance improve in four to eight weeks. Lines and wrinkles take longer — twelve weeks to six months of consistent use is the realistic window, and retinol is one of the very few topicals with real evidence behind that claim.

Can I use it with acids or vitamin C?

Not in the same routine when starting out. Alternate nights, or acids in the morning and retinol at night, once your skin has adapted.

What if my skin peels?

Reduce the frequency rather than stopping altogether, and increase moisturiser. Peeling means too much too soon, not that retinol is wrong for you.

How should I store it?

Somewhere cool and dark, with the cap closed. Heat and light degrade actives — vitamin C and retinol especially — so a bathroom windowsill is the worst place in the house for them.
