Buying for a Bangladeshi Kitchen

• Wattage matters for grinding. Under 500W handles smoothies. Wet masala, dry spices and ice need 600W and upwards, and a low-wattage motor asked to do it burns out.

• Spare parts availability decides how long a machine lasts. One you cannot get a replacement jar or blade for has a short life whatever it cost.

• Voltage. Bangladesh runs 220-240V. A 110-120V import needs a step-down converter — a plug adapter alone destroys it.

• Weight and stability. A light machine walks across the counter when grinding something hard.

Not Killing the Motor

• Liquid first, solids after.

• Two-thirds full at most, and less for anything hot.

• Never blend anything boiling in a sealed jar. Steam expands and blows the lid off — cool it, fill half way, hold the lid with a cloth.

• Short bursts, not continuous running. Most motors here are rated for a minute or two at a time.

• Stop at once if the motor smells hot and let it cool completely.

• Unplug before clearing a jam, and never put a hand or spoon in while it runs.

Descaling, Cleaning and Power

• Descale anything that heats water — kettles, steamers — monthly with vinegar and water. Limescale is what kills them: a scaled element takes longer to boil, then overheats and fails.

• Rinse jars straight after use; dried masala and milk are far harder to shift later. Dry blade assemblies completely before storing — a damp seal grows mould and a damp blade rusts. Never immerse a motor base.

• Use a surge protector. Voltage fluctuation damages control boards and motors more than use does.

How often should I descale?

Monthly for anything that boils water, with equal parts white vinegar and water, then two rinse cycles. It is the single thing that most extends their life.
