Identify What You Are Treating First

Topical treatments are not interchangeable, and the wrong one makes things worse rather than doing nothing.

• Fungal — a ring shape with a raised, scaly, active edge and a clearer centre. Itchy rather than painful, and common in warm damp folds: groin, under the breasts, between the toes.

• Bacterial — red, warm, tender and spreading, often with pus or golden crusting.

• Inflammatory (eczema, dermatitis) — itchy, dry, poorly defined edges, often symmetrical.

• The most damaging mistake here is a steroid cream on a fungal infection. It calms the itch for a day or two and then the infection spreads dramatically underneath. Combination steroid-antifungal creams are widely misused in this region for exactly that reason.

Ointment or Cream?

• Ointments are greasy, occlusive and stay put. They work better and are absorbed more, which is why an ointment version of a steroid is stronger than the cream version of the same drug.

• Creams are lighter and cosmetically easier, and better for weeping or hairy areas.

• Gels suit hairy areas and joints, and are the usual form for anti-inflammatory pain relief.

Using Them Safely

• A thin layer is enough. More is not stronger; it is wasted and it increases absorption where you do not want it.

• Apply beyond the visible edge of a fungal patch — the active border extends further than you can see.

• Continue antifungals one to two weeks past clearance. Stopping early is why they recur endlessly.

• Do not cover a steroid cream with a dressing unless told to — occlusion greatly increases absorption.

• Wash your hands after applying, and never share a tube.

• Anti-inflammatory gels still enter the bloodstream. Tell your doctor if you have stomach, kidney or asthma problems.

How long can I use a steroid cream?

As directed — usually one to two weeks, and less on the face. Prolonged unsupervised use thins the skin permanently.

How do I know the product is genuine?

Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.

How much shelf life will it have?
