EDT, EDP and Body Spray — What You Are Buying

This is the most useful thing to know before buying any fragrance, and almost no listing explains it. The difference is how much perfume oil is in the bottle:

• Body spray — 1-3% oil. One to two hours, made to be reapplied, which is why the bottle is large.

• Eau de Toilette (EDT) — 5-15%. Three to five hours. The office strength.

• Eau de Parfum (EDP) — 15-20%. Five to eight hours, and it projects further. Evenings and occasions.

• Attar — undiluted oil, alcohol-free. Sits close to the skin, outlasts an EDP, and a 6ml bottle lasts months.

Buying the wrong strength for the occasion is why people say a fragrance “does not last”.

Applying It

• After a shower, on moisturised skin. Dry skin will not hold fragrance — this is the biggest single difference between two hours and six.

• Pulse points — sides of the neck, inner wrists, behind the ears. Warmth lifts the scent.

• 15 to 20cm away, and spray rather than dabbing the nozzle on.

• Do not rub your wrists together. The friction breaks the top notes.

• Two or three sprays. You go nose-blind to your own fragrance in twenty minutes; the people around you do not, and a lift is a small space.

Choosing by Occasion and Season

• Day and office — fresh, citrus, aquatic or a light fougère. Light enough not to fill a shared room.

• Evening and winter — woody, oriental, spicy, amber. These project and last.

• Hot weather amplifies everything. A heavy oriental that is elegant in December becomes overwhelming in May — use one spray fewer, or switch to something fresher.

• Never buy on the first sniff. The top notes vanish in fifteen minutes; the heart and base are what you actually wear. Spray, walk away, and smell it again after two hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does it not last on me?

Usually dry skin. Moisturise first — an unscented lotion on the pulse points gives fragrance something to hold on to, and it makes a genuine difference.

Can I spray it on clothes?

Yes, and fabric holds scent longer than skin. Test a hidden seam first on silk or pale colours, and keep it off leather.

Does perfume expire?

It degrades rather than spoils. Kept cool and dark, an opened bottle is at its best for two to three years. Do not store it in the bathroom — the daily steam-and-cool swing is the worst place in the house.

How do I know the product is genuine?

Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.
