Herbal And Nutraceuticals covers herbal preparations, traditional formulations and plant-based supplements sold for well-being.

“Herbal” Is Not the Same as “Harmless”

Plants are chemistry — that is why they work, and it is also why they need respect.

• Interactions are real and some are serious. Several common herbal products affect blood thinners, blood pressure medication, diabetes drugs and thyroid replacement. Tell your doctor everything you take, including anything described as natural.

• Dosage is often unstandardised. Unlike a medicine, the amount of active compound in a herbal product can vary between batches and between brands.

• Some are hard on the liver at high doses or with prolonged use.

• Contamination is the real risk in unregulated products. Heavy metals and undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients have repeatedly been found in traditional preparations sold without proper controls. Buy from brands that publish their ingredients and can be identified.

• Avoid herbal supplements in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor has approved the specific product.

Buying Sensibly

• Look for a named manufacturer, an address and a batch number. A product with none of those is a product nobody is accountable for.

• Look for the standardised extract percentage where one is stated — it is the difference between a measured product and a guess.

• Treat guaranteed cures as a warning sign. A genuine product describes what it contains and what it is for.

• Give it eight to twelve weeks. Herbal preparations generally work gently and gradually; anything working in days is a stimulant or a laxative.

• One at a time, so you know what did what.

Where These Products Sit

They are supplements, not medicines. They do not treat a diagnosed disease and should be taken alongside prescribed treatment rather than instead of it. Where a herbal product genuinely helps — sleep, digestion, mild stress, general well-being — it helps modestly and slowly, and that is worth saying plainly.

Storing It Properly

Bangladesh’s heat and humidity are harder on most products than anything else they will meet.

• Cool, dry and out of direct sunlight — not a sunny windowsill, and not the hottest corner of the bathroom.

• Keep the cap closed properly. Air and moisture do more damage over months than anything else.

• Do not decant into an unmarked container. Once the pack is gone, so are the batch number, the expiry date and the instructions.

• Keep it out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are herbal products safer than conventional medicine?

Not automatically. They are generally less concentrated and less strictly regulated, which cuts both ways — milder effects, but less certainty about what is in the bottle.

Can I take these with my prescription?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. This is not a formality; herb-drug interactions are common and some are serious.

How long before I notice anything?

Eight to twelve weeks for most things in this category. Be sceptical of anything promising results in days.

How do I know the product is genuine?

Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.

How much shelf life will it have?

We stock to arrive well within date and do not knowingly ship anything close to expiry. If you need a specific minimum for a particular order, ask before placing it and we will check the batch.
