Getting Diapering Right

• Change frequently — every two to three hours for a young baby, and immediately after a bowel movement. Time against the skin is the main cause of nappy rash.

• Fit matters more than brand. Too loose leaks; too tight leaves marks and rubs. Two fingers should slide under the waistband, and the leg cuffs should be pulled out rather than tucked in — tucked cuffs are the commonest cause of leaks.

• Size by weight, not by age. Leaking usually means the size is wrong rather than the brand.

• Do not stockpile a size. Babies move through them faster than anyone expects.

• Barrier cream at every change as prevention, applied thickly enough to still see.

• Nappy-free time, even ten minutes twice a day, makes a visible difference.

Potty Training When the Child Is Ready

Readiness is about the child, not the calendar. Most children are ready somewhere between eighteen months and three years, and starting before they are ready makes it take longer, not shorter.

The signs: staying dry for two hours or more, telling you when they are wet or soiled, showing interest in the toilet, being able to pull clothes up and down, and following simple instructions.

• Start when life is calm — not during a house move, a new sibling or an illness.

• Expect accidents and do not make anything of them. Pressure and disappointment reliably set the process back.

• Loose, easy clothes during training.

• Praise the trying, not only the succeeding.

• Night dryness comes much later — often a year or more after daytime, and it is not something a child can control.
