Deodorant or Antiperspirant?

They are sold side by side and they do different jobs:

• A deodorant does not stop sweat. It masks and slows odour — which is not produced by sweat itself, since fresh sweat is nearly odourless, but by skin bacteria breaking it down over a few hours.

• An antiperspirant reduces the sweat, using aluminium salts that temporarily block the ducts. If the problem is a wet shirt rather than a smell, this is the one you need.

Many products are both, and the pack will say so.

The Two Habits That Change Everything

• Apply to clean, completely dry skin. On damp skin the product dilutes and does very little.

• Apply an antiperspirant at night. This is the single most useful piece of advice in the category and almost nobody is told it. Antiperspirants work by forming plugs in the sweat ducts, which happens best when you are sweating least — overnight. It then survives the morning shower and works through the following day. Applying it in the morning, as you begin to sweat, is applying it at the worst possible moment.

Two more: never apply straight after shaving — freshly shaved skin has had its top layer scraped off, which is where the stinging and the rash come from — and let it dry fully before dressing.

On Yellow Shirt Stains and Dark Underarms

• The yellow marks in white shirts are not sweat. They are the reaction between aluminium salts and the proteins in sweat, set permanently by ironing. Using less product, letting it dry before dressing, and washing shirts before the mark sets does more than changing brands.

• Underarm darkening is usually friction, shaving and old product build-up rather than pigmentation. Shaving less often, looser sleeves and washing product off properly at night help more than anything sold for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does aluminium in antiperspirant cause harm?

The claims linking it to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s have been examined repeatedly and are not supported by the evidence. If you prefer to avoid it, aluminium-free deodorants control odour but do not reduce sweat.

Why has my deodorant stopped working?

Usually build-up or a change in the skin’s bacteria. Wash the underarm properly at night, let the skin recover for a few days, and try a different formulation.

Can women use men’s deodorant and the other way round?

Yes. The difference is scent and packaging, not chemistry.
