Reading a Drink Label Honestly

Drinks are where most people take on more sugar than they realise, because liquid sugar does not register the way food does.

• Check the sugar per 100ml, not per bottle. A “small” 250ml bottle at 11g per 100ml is nearly 28g of sugar — around seven teaspoons.

• “Juice drink” and “nectar” are not juice. Juice drink is often 10% juice and the rest water and sugar. Only “100% juice” means what it says.

• 100% juice is still sugar. It has vitamins, but the fibre has gone and the sugar is absorbed as quickly as it is from a soft drink. Whole fruit is better.

• “No added sugar” does not mean low sugar — fruit sugar counts, and sweeteners are often used instead.

• Check the caffeine in energy drinks, particularly for teenagers.

Drinks and Teeth

Dentists see more damage from drinks than from sweets, and it is worth knowing why. Acid is the problem as much as sugar — fizzy drinks and citrus juices are acidic enough to soften enamel directly.

• Drink it with a meal rather than sipping through the afternoon. Constant sipping keeps the mouth acidic for hours.

• Use a straw for anything acidic, and do not swill it around the mouth.

• Rinse with water afterwards, and wait an hour before brushing — brushing softened enamel wears it away.

• Never give a child a bottle of juice or a sweet drink at bedtime.

Storing Drinks in This Climate

• Once opened, refrigerate and use within the stated days. Juice ferments quickly in the heat here.

• Keep unopened bottles out of sunlight. Light and heat degrade vitamin C and change the flavour.

• Do not refill single-use plastic bottles repeatedly; they are not made for it and are hard to clean properly.

• Powdered mixes need airtight storage — humidity turns them solid within days of opening.

Is fruit juice a healthy choice?

It is better than a soft drink and worse than fruit. The fibre has been removed, so the sugar hits quickly. A small glass with a meal is reasonable; a large glass as a drink through the day is not.

Are diet and zero-sugar drinks better?

They avoid the sugar and the calories, which is a real advantage, and they are still acidic and still erode enamel. Water is the drink that has no downside.

How should I store an opened bottle?

In the fridge, capped, and used within the days stated on the label. In this climate an opened juice left out will spoil the same day.

How much shelf life will it have?

We stock to arrive well within date and do not knowingly ship anything close to expiry. If you need a specific minimum for a particular order, ask before placing it and we will check the batch.

How long does delivery take?
