What to Keep at Home Before You Need It

• A digital thermometer. A number is worth more to a doctor than “he feels warm”, and it is what decides whether a call can wait until morning.

• A nasal aspirator and saline drops. A blocked nose is the commonest reason a baby cannot feed or sleep, and saline plus suction is the standard, medicine-free answer.

• Baby nail clippers or a file. Long nails are how babies scratch their own faces.

• A barrier cream for nappy rash before it starts.

When to Stop Shopping and Call a Doctor

This is the most important part of this page. Take a baby to a doctor the same day for any of these:

• Fever in a baby under three months — any fever, without waiting.

• Difficulty breathing — fast breathing, the ribs pulling in, grunting, or a blue tinge to lips.

• Refusing feeds, far fewer wet nappies, or a dry mouth — the signs of dehydration.

• Unusual sleepiness, floppiness, or a cry that sounds different.

• A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass.

• Vomiting that is persistent, green, or contains blood.

Using These Products Safely

• Never give adult medicine to a child, and never guess a dose. Paediatric doses are by weight.

• Sterilise anything that goes in the mouth or nose for a baby under six months.

• Check the age on every pack. Many products are labelled from three or six months for good reason.

What temperature counts as a fever?

38°C or above. In a baby under three months, any fever needs a doctor the same day — do not wait to see whether it settles.

Are nasal aspirators safe for a newborn?

Yes, used gently and not too often. Two or three saline drops first, then suction, before feeds and before sleep. Over-suctioning irritates the lining and makes the blockage worse.

Can I use gripe water for colic?

Many parents find it helps and it is widely used, but the evidence is thin and colic usually settles on its own by three to four months. Check the label for alcohol and sugar, and see a doctor if crying is extreme, constant, or comes with vomiting or poor weight gain.

How do I know the product is genuine?

Check the seal, the batch number and the expiry printed on the pack itself rather than on a sticker over it. Everything we sell is sourced to arrive sealed and within date, and if what you receive does not match the listing we will put it right.

How long does delivery take?
