Saporito Gherkins are small pickled cucumbers in brine, in a 670gm jar. Crisp, sharp and salty — the pickle that goes in a burger, alongside cold meat and cheese, or chopped into a potato salad or tartare sauce.

A gherkin is not a Bangladeshi achar. It is not oily and it is not spiced — it is cucumber preserved in vinegar brine, so the flavour is sour and salty rather than hot, and it is used as a sharp contrast against rich food rather than as a condiment in its own right.

Ways to Use Them

• Sliced into a burger or a sandwich — the classic use
• Alongside cold cuts, cheese or a roast
• Chopped into potato salad, egg salad, or a tartare sauce for fried fish
• Straight from the jar as a sharp, low-calorie snack

Keeping the Jar

• Refrigerate after opening and keep the gherkins under the brine — anything above the liquid spoils first.
• Use a clean fork every time. Fingers or a used spoon introduce bacteria into a jar that will then sit for weeks.
• They stay good for several weeks in the fridge once opened. Throw the jar out if the brine turns cloudy or slimy or smells wrong.
• Store the unopened jar somewhere cool and dark.

An Honest Word on Salt

Pickles are preserved in salt, and gherkins are high in sodium. They are very low in calories, which makes them a genuinely good snack in that respect — but if you are watching salt or blood pressure, they are not a free food. Check the nutrition panel on the jar.
